How to revert to x.org 7.3 before installing 8.10.x64?

Help a n00b today!

Have not been able to install [kubuntu] 8.10.x64. Starts installation, then the screen goes dark and of course, the CD stops spinning and I reboot. Checked and reburned the CD, even the alternate ISO via text installation. Nothing works, and I can't even see what I'm installing on screen (monitor is recognized with the LiveCD). Works fine with Fedora, but I'm a Kubuntu man now.

I figure it's my ATI 4850 Radeon card is causing the problem, which the ATI Catalyst 8.10 driver supports x.org 7.3, not 7.4. How can I:

• Install the Catalyst 8.10 driver before I install the OS? or
• Revert to 7.3 during installation?

Use the minimal install CD maybe.
