Unhappy 8.10/Ibex Upgrade: Kernel Panic on Boot

I upgraded my Macbook (running x86-64) to Ibex using the upgrade tool. When I boot, the 2.6.27-7 kernel panics:

    That's:
    PANIC: early execption 0e rip 10:ffffffff00224601 error 0 cr2 ffffffffff5fc0f0

Fortunately, I can still boot in 2.6.24-21... but this would turn out to be a pretty crappy upgrade experience for any non-technical users.

Maybe it's a seattle thing, lol. Same thing, except on a homemade. Only after upgrading did I get the panic. Likewise using the .21 flavor.... Will probably do a fresh install, but looking for a workaround in the meantime.

Cool Re: 8.10/Ibex Upgrade: Kernel Panic on Boot

My hunch is that this is a 64-bit specific bug; there's never enough QA love for the 64-bit versions.

Since I don't even have 4gb of ram (and since this was a work machine, with all of my important files safely tucked away in version control), I wiped and set up Xubuntu 32-bit. Things are dandy now.

Henceforth, my rule of thumb is this: unless I actually need the extended memory addressing (ie, a server), there's not a compelling reason to go 64-bit.
