when I play videos in VLC, for some reason the size of the video is much smaller than it used to be.
even if I change the options under "video" like zoom and aspect ratio, nothing changes.
any ideas?

What happens if you change 'aspect ratio'? It's found under 'video' as well.

Crop the video to 16:9 or 16:10. Maybe this helps.
