    Re: Alsa 1.0.18 Installation Script

Many people will find this useful:

    Configuring alsa-base

    To identify your codec:
    Code:
    aplay -l
    cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
Now, open /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base with the following command:
    Code:
    gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
Modify or add this line with modelname = to the appropriate model name from the list below:
    Code:
    options snd-hda-intel model=modelname
    Code:
      Module snd-hda-intel
      --------------------

        Module for Intel HD Audio (ICH6, ICH6M, ESB2, ICH7, ICH8, ICH9, ICH10,
    			PCH, SCH),
    		ATI SB450, SB600, R600, RS600, RS690, RS780, RV610, RV620,
    			RV630, RV635, RV670, RV770,
    		VIA VT8251/VT8237A,
    		SIS966, ULI M5461

[Multiple options for each card instance]
model	- force the model name
        position_fix - Fix DMA pointer (0 = auto, 1 = use LPIB, 2 = POSBUF)
probe_mask - Bitmask to probe codecs (default = -1, meaning all slots)
bdl_pos_adj	- Specifies the DMA IRQ timing delay in samples.
Passing -1 will make the driver to choose the appropriate
value based on the controller chip.

        [Single (global) options]
single_cmd - Use single immediate commands to communicate with
    		codecs (for debugging only)
enable_msi	- Enable Message Signaled Interrupt (MSI) (default = off)
        power_save	- Automatic power-saving timtout (in second, 0 =
    		disable)
        power_save_controller - Reset HD-audio controller in power-saving mode
    		(default = on)

This module supports multiple cards and autoprobe.

Each codec may have a model table for different configurations.
If your machine isn't listed there, the default (usually minimal)
configuration is set up. You can pass "model=<name>" option to
specify a certain model in such a case. There are different
models depending on the codec chip.

The model name "genric" is treated as a special case. When this
model is given, the driver uses the generic codec parser without
"codec-patch". It's sometimes good for testing and debugging.

If the default configuration doesn't work and one of the above
matches with your device, report it together with the PCI
subsystem ID (output of "lspci -nv") to ALSA BTS or alsa-devel
ML (see the section "Links and Addresses").

    Re: Alsa 1.0.18 Installation Script

    Hi folks.

I need to update the script. You'll find a revision 1.11. for download

Obviously the lib has to be installed with "make install", prior to
compiling the utils. So - my guess was right.

BTW: I am not available for the next 3 days!!! Don't expect me to answer your questions while I am away.

    THX for the feedback.

Does this help in getting spdif out with pulseaudio?. If so I may try it.

    Re: Alsa 1.0.18 Installation Script

Is there a launchpad repository for 1.0.18? as much as source builds sounds like an adventure almost worth trying, I'd rather be garnering packages from the ubuntu development team.

    Re: Alsa 1.0.18 Installation Script

Oh dear The first scripton this thread seems to have broke on my Aspire one running Hardy.

1.0.18final Alsa drivers installed but didn't work, alsamixer failed too alsactl -v says 1.0.18

however the earlier script 1.0.18r3 works a treat

So I am reuploading it here with this Post.

I havent tried the latest revision a cpl of posts up from this one. but the first one in this thread seems broke to me.

    Re: Alsa 1.0.18 Installation Script

Please excuse any of my stupidity as I am very new to this. I have been trying to get sound on my acer 6920 working with intrepid. I am trying to install Alsa 1.0.18, but whenever I check the logfile it says "-------------------------------------------------------------
    - Prepare for compilation and installation...
    -------------------------------------------------------------

/usr/src/Alsa-1.0.18 not found". I believe I have done this script correctly but I'm very new to this stuff so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Alsa 1.0.18 Installation Script

I'm getting errors when i try to "sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel"

    sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel
    [sudo] password for bob:

I added dmesg to you're uxchecker -a output...
If you need more info, just say so.

    Additional info:
    I have a ICH8 (Asus p5b) on board soundcard, Ubuntu 8.10, linux 2.6.27-7-generic and alsa 1.18 installed with AlsaUpgrade-1.0.x-rev-1.11.sh
aplay -l returns nothing, lspci | grep Audio does return the soundcard.
And well I was about to try modprobe snd-hda-intel and then add it to the modules list.

Oh and the sound didn't work before either....
    But modprobe did.

    Re: Alsa 1.0.18 Installation Script

    Hi there.

Quite some strange errors around here?!?

If all the 160 people who downloaded the script by now have used it
successfully, we are talking not about a generic issue with the script -
    I hope.

    1. The guys with the alsa-utils-error: Did you make it work?

    2. Hint: During these early days of Intrepid the kernel will be upgraded more often.
If aplay -l doesn't show anything you should try to install the drivers again.

The same if you're using two kernels. You can just install Alsa on one kernel. I discussed it with the Alsa guys. (This is the same with e.g. the
    fglrx driver.)
The Alsa guys are planning to introduce Alsa to dkms sooner or later.
This way Alsa would be autoinstalled on different kernels.

    3. You can or even should also issue 1.0.18 TroubleTickets especially driver related problems - on the Alsa-Mailing List.
    http://mailman.alsa-project.org/mail...nfo/alsa-devel
They don't really use bugtracker or launchpad or similar.
You can of course limit the risk of failure if you compile the alsa-drivers just for your particular soundcard.

    4. The whole Alsa installation procedure should be done only by people, who know what they are doing and who are able to understand what's done in the script. Linux
beginners should not start with a manual installation of Alsa.
This for sure will cause quite some frustration.

    5. In any way in case of problems the way to go is - "Google" .
I do not do it any different in most of the cases.
Usually you can Google the exact error message.

    6. If you look for new features something like "SPDIF over pulseaudio", what I wouldn't call a feature. Since SPDIF is a driver issue and
if the driver/codec shows an SPDIF output you'd be able to run it with pulse. This would be the wrong place You should know that you need 1.0.18
or you're a hacker who's happy only with the very latest revision number
    of everything.

In case of new features or bugfixes you need to look up the revision changelogs at the Alsa homepage. Just do this exercise for fun and you'll start appreciate what these poor guys have to manage. I
think it is ridiculous that the soundcard industry is not putting at least a bit support into this.

Alsa is getting more and more complex. Some cards need even e.g. video drivers loaded to compile properly. I personally won't be able to cover it.

If it turns out that the script is very unstable and causing damage I'll
    take it out again.

    Cheers

    Re: Alsa 1.0.18 Installation Script

    Hi,
I used the alsa upgrade script on Acer Aspire one 150L with ubuntu, the log said me "Installation successfully finished". Now I have alsa 1.0.18 the sound, mic, headphone work but when I put headphone the system doesn't mute speakers.
I tried the command alsamixer -V all to see the mixer but the command return "snd_mixer_load failed =invalid argument".

The gnome-alsamixer give me "segmentation fault".

    How can I solve?

    (excuse me from my english)
