Yes, that's quite strange. The only thing I can think of is that there's possibly an IP address conflict, especially since you're using static IP. That doesn't really explain why the performance improves when your computer is moved closer to your brother's, but it's the only thing that makes any sense to me.

Re: Belkin USB Wireless Stick F5D7051

i thought that myself, so i've tried various ip addresses on my pc without success.

besides, i set the whole network up myself so there's definitely no conflicts (no dhcp is enabled on the router either)

really is strange. next port of call is trying the woman's dongle in my machine (ooo err). i really hope it works because at least then it's just a faulty device.

by the way, it's my brother's pc being moved closer to mine. might not sound important but my pc has remained static in all this - proving that the signal is ok. it works perfectly until my bro's laptop is switched on.
i'm going to be moving into my own house within the next couple of months too and i'll have enough to worry about getting the place in shape without my network causing me stress, i just hope it turns out to be something stupid causing the problem.

If you had a lot of time on your hands and wanted to learn about low-level wireless networking, you could run a sniffer like kismet or airodump-ng to see what kind of traffic is in the air when your computer disconnects. Maybe your brother's machine is triggering deauthentication packets from the router or something strange like that. You'd probably need to look at the packets in Wireshark to figure out exactly what they're doing.

But again, this would probably be a lot of work for minimal return if you're going to be moving soon anyway.

i'm a stubborn bar steward though, and i hate being beaten

more likely the problem will be that i won't have time, i spend most of my time in the mrs' house atm.

    pretty annoying.

doubt i'll get the time to learn a great deal about it this time, which is a pity, would have been a good oportunity to become more of a geek. oh well, i suppose it'll give me something to do

tried the second belkin adapter in my pc, same result.

tried both adapters in my laptop and they did the same thing, it's obviously some sort of issue with this type of adapter or more likely just the driver, downloaded the latest version of compat wireless and it's still doing the same thing so i'll keep my fingers crossed that the driver gets improved at some stage to fix this problem.

Yes, it's probably the driver then (although the last variable that you'd need to test would be your router--does the same problem occur on a different network?).

If you don't want to wait for compat-wireless to fix the issue (which you may want to report to them--or to Ubuntu because I'm not sure if the rtl8187 bug tracker is still active), you could always give ndiswrapper a try...

hi pytheas22 i've been playing with ubuntu and finally i did it i reinstalled ubuntu 8.10, and now it seems to flash (i think it might have been beacuse of the driver), but i went into synaptic and typed in "rt2500usb" and there it was there so i installed it, restarted my computer and it was flashing but with a better signal and speed.

Re: Belkin USB Wireless Stick F5D7051

This seems to be the thread to be for the Belkin adapter! I have a 2day old mythbuntu install that im trying to get the adapter working on. Last night I plugged it in and didnt immediatly see that I had to click on the network adapter to switch to wireless signal, so I spent some time running through different how tos and such just to finally realize it was working right from the get go!

So it worked fine last night and this morning, but after a reboot earlier it dissappeared! I assume this is because i mucked around with settings that I shouldnt have. I followed the guide on the first page of this thread and now when I click the network icon I can see 'wireless networks' and below it a greyed message that says 'device is unmanaged'. So I know the system sees it but I cant get it to scan for networks or anything really. Any help would be fantastic!

EDIT: my exact adapter is the Belkin 7050 version 3000

ukulele_ninja: please post the output of these commands to provide a clearer picture of what's going on:
    Code:
    lsusb
    lshw -C Network
    sudo iwlist scan
    uname -rm
