    How do I install XFree86?

Earlier, yesterday or something, I asked for drivers for S3 Savage4, and I actually got a link to a page who had them (Yaaaay), anyhow, when trying to install them, I get the output
    Code:
    root@k-designs:/home/joel/Desktop/s3savage-1.0-15# ./install.sh
    You must have XFree86 installed.
So, as it doesn't exist in the repos, I thought I might ask.
I cannot compile anything due to a somewhat broken processor
Anyhow, any help is much appreciated!
    I don't blame you.

Is there any deb package for XFree86?
And sorry for the double post, but the edit button is not there!

Yupp, and I got the output:
    Code:
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
Package xserver-xfree86 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
      xserver-xorg-core
E: Package xserver-xfree86 has no installation candidate
    So no go with that...
    I don't blame you.

    Will XFree86 be in 8.10?

Nobody uses xfree86 anymore. Its outdated. As are, i suspect the graphics drivers you found. Ubuntu and pretty much every other distro uses x.org which is a fork of xfree86. Ubuntu should have automatically installed drivers for that video card anyway. Type glxgears and glxinfo into a terminal and show us the output.

Re: How do I install XFree86?

Well, glxgears gave me a window with 3 Dimensional gears, obviously, here is the terminal output:
    Code:
    joel@capricorn:~$ glxgears
    1216 frames in 5.0 seconds = 243.083 FPS
    1235 frames in 5.0 seconds = 246.947 FPS
    1235 frames in 5.0 seconds = 246.884 FPS
    1223 frames in 5.0 seconds = 244.444 FPS
    1235 frames in 5.0 seconds = 246.913 FPS
    1235 frames in 5.0 seconds = 246.880 FPS
    1234 frames in 5.0 seconds = 246.622 FPS
    1235 frames in 5.0 seconds = 246.885 FPS
    1235 frames in 5.0 seconds = 246.947 FPS
    1235 frames in 5.0 seconds = 246.947 FPS
    1235 frames in 5.0 seconds = 246.960 FPS
    1235 frames in 5.0 seconds = 246.966 FPS
    1215 frames in 5.0 seconds = 242.837 FPS
    1078 frames in 5.0 seconds = 215.528 FPS
I got bored and closed it...
    And here is glxinfo
    Code:
    joel@capricorn:~$ glxinfo

So, looks like your problem is solved?
    direct rendering: Yes
This means that you have hardware-accelerated 3D graphics, so your driver must be working as it should.

XFree86 is X Windows server software which is obsolete. It will not be in Intrepid and you don't want it.

But this computer can't use any other compositing manager but Metacity, I've heard that it should be able to use the KDE one, but it doesn't...

I have the same problem, that is trying to get S3 Savage4 to work, I get the same results as dojan. I mainly want some desktop effects. Any help would be helpful.
