Toshiba L300 kernel upgrade

Hi

I have a nice shiny ubuntu desktop now but no internet access.
I managed to get it working by disabling the LAN in the bios and now apparently need to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.24-19 as shown in this post

I only need a wired connection at the moment and have a desktop with an internet connection to work on.

I believe I can download this kernel to a usb stick and install it onto the laptop.
Can someone give me step by steps for this process. Then I can access the online tutorials regarding ubuntu, sudo, command lines and all other recently discovered esoterica, find out what I'm doing and all will be well in my world.

Hve got an afternoon free to play with this so excuse me if I'm bumping way to early. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
