Definitely. And don't forget, this anonymizes you - it doesn't protect your data. If you log in to your (plain text, unencrypted) email through Tor, anyone running an end node can read it. Please see:

Using Tor may actually draw attention - especially if you run a node. People have been busted for the traffic of OTHERS running through their nodes. It's an interesting fight if you are concerned about privacy and freedom of speech. But if you're just looking for a way to do illegal stuff, it's bad news. (Though I'm sure many-a-hacker hath found solace in Tor) If you just don't want your small town ISP knowing that you look at totally legal T & A, well... more power to ya. I am no expert, but this is what I have picked up through this forum and articles on Digg.

Ok. basically I followed everything in the tutorial, and when I visit the URL www.watismijnip.nl I get a different IP address than I did before installing privoxy and tor. However, upon visiting this site www.whatsmyip.org/ It gives me the same number it did before I installed and configured the software. Whats up? Does tor only fools some sites?

i haven't read through this thread so i don't know anything about a toolbar, but maybe you forgot to chain privoxy with TOR and your browser is just connecting straight to the site without going through privoxy.

if you want to be sure to be anonymous you have to be careful about your browser making direct connections through java applets and flash, you can either disable javascipt and java, or make them go through privoxy.

An alternative method to secure browsing:

1. install SQUID and "ssh" on home machine with Synaptic ( for the time being, just enable "http allow all" in the squid.conf )
2. Setup a Secure tunnel from your machine to your home machine using Putty.exe .
3. Point webbrowser at the local port that Putty listens on.

all web traffic is piped from your browser through putty to your home sshd daemon (port 22) and forwarded to squid on your home machine.

thats it.

What does squid in this configuration do for you?? It might mask the clients IP address, however would it just allow the IP address of the server to be sent??

Also can you explain to me any other additional steps to setup squid?

As mentioned earlier, it's wise to know that Tor doesn't protect your data. Data traffic through exit nodes is easily monitored. Using accounts with a login/passwd without any encryption can be a bad idea with privoxy installed.

Followed the HowTo and works according to the torcheck site. It does slow things down a bit. how do i turn it off if i don't need it?
