I am quitting Linux and Open-source sever software forever
I have spent countless hours, each day, for five years fiddling with Linux, Apache, MySQL, and the endless numbers of plug-ins and unfinished hobby-prjects.
I will not be wasting anymore of my time reading the idiotic guides and tutorials which fail to ever get to the point about anything at all, and are filled with incorrect commands. I will not be wasting any more of my time on the endless "Compile this and Compile that" nonsense of the Apache family of incomplete projects. I will not be wasting any more of my time on Linux nor MySQL riduclous command line verbage - which always appears to be intended as cutesy rather than practical. Am I a Windows fan? Almost - it works out of the box. Am I a Microsoft fan - of course not. Who could like such a lousy company run by arrogant creeps. I am practical. I cannot afford to spend another five years fiddling with other peoples' unfinished hobby-project software. I must earn a living, which I cannot do with Linux-based computers that refuse to function worth a damn. Fix all of the endless problems in Linux - every one of them, then maybe you'll win the battle against Microsoft. For me, I must earn a living. I cannot do this with computers that are loaded with nonfunctioning Linux crap. I won't logging in to read the pathetic "Windows has worms" nor the "Big Conspiracy" rubbish written by twelve year olds who use their computers to play rap mp3s and then claim to be "Experts". Free as in "I don't need this waste of time", Goodbye all. |

Re: I am quitting Linux and Open-source sever software forever
Five years, huh? For me, that's three of my computers I've used Linux on, many user-hostile issues fixed, and many enhancements. If you were just starting out, you better be grateful that you can just stick a USB drive and it will pick up -- I had to manually mount it several years ago. Also, no software project is ever "complete" -- if Windows were "complete" now, we'd be stuck with Windows XP. Since we don't see that happening, it's obvious that software goes through constant cycles of improvements. The same can be said for open source.
Also, I would like to refute your belief that this was written by some twelve-year-olds. Just to name a few companies, with full-grown adults, we have Novell, Red Hat, Sun Microsystems, Canonical, etc. providing service, developing software, and making a living (enough to sustain a family, thank you very much) off of it. Speaking of practicality, do consider that Linux is being used to route transactions in NYSE. Not only that, but you can find Linux in TiVO, routers, and various bits of infrastructure. Was Linux challenging? Yes. Did it try my patience? All the time! Linux isn't right for everyone, especially those who blindly type in commands and expect them to be "correct" and those who can't stand command line. Command line is not archaic or "cutesy" -- it'll be the only thing that'll save your bacon if you need to administer a server from far, far away on only a cellular uplink. On a personal note, I don't play MP3s with rap music. My musical tastes include jazz, public radio, and a little bit of mainstream music. I am 21 years old and studying Electrical Engineering at UT Austin, specializing in power systems and energy conversion. I am NOT an expert, but I have learned to think on my feet and have a drive to learn.

Re: I am quitting Linux and Open-source sever software forever
I have no clue what type of computer(s) your trying to get Linux to work on nor what your trying to do with them, but it really sounds as if you don't know squat about Linux. You say you have five years using Linux and then go on to describe your problems with reading Linux guides. My question is, how can anyone who has used Linux for five years not have any idea about little things like simple bash commands, the Linux file structure, GCC, etc. Thats all you need to know to fix 98.9% of any problems you encounter while using Linux afterall. Heck, I have only been using Linux for less than two years now, and have yet to come across any issue that could not be fixed with a few simple bash commands. Sure, some server apps like Mysql and Apache have a steep learning curve if your not a programmer, but the documentation for those projects is really good. Open Source has the caveat that laerning is YOUR responsibility, not the programmers to hold your hand. Linux is not for everyone, especially those who dont want to make an effort to learn.

Way Too Much Ubuntu

<RANT>
I've been maintaining/fixing/repairing Windwows servers for several years. It is strange, but I've been facing so much issues that were dead-end, always having to find a workaround, hoping for the next service pack, crossing my fingers. And let's talk about those service packs, that every IT fears that it will break something. Nobody thrust those update, never knowing is it will break your software/solution (Remeber SP3 on Windows 2000 and SP1 on Windows XP). Did you know that SQL Server 2005 needed an access to the internet when using text search service? That the fix provided by Microsoft is "Give access to internet to your server! Oh yeah, there is this little cryptic command that you can do, but we don't support it...". Every OS has is problems, but those in Windows are often dead-end that you cannot do a thing about it... It is often "it has been reported, should be fix in the next service pack/version". Or you have a strange behaviour with your server on your network, only to find out, after several investigations, using softwares that cost an arm and leg that your driver is not working properly. So what about the Event Viewer? Why is it not logged somewhere that there is a problem with the network interface in a manner that we can understand and not by using cryptic error event? This is real life for me and Windows servers (and desktops). Always stuck in a manner of having to find a workaround, while waiting for the next release... Registry keys, strange VBScript, COM+, DCOM Securities... Then reinstalling in the hope that it will fix the problem... In Linux, the worst case is: Ah, yeah, the bug was found in line 2674, the variable was not initialised, here's the patch to apply to fix it if you cannot wait (5 days...) for the next release! ... configure, make, sudo make install... Bingo! </RANT> Geee! I feel good! ![]()

Re: I am quitting Linux and Open-source sever software forever
As far as I know, writing such an article is a more "waste of time" than fiddling with Linux.
Use whatever serves you best, no one force you to Linux. This is the heart of freedom. |

Bored with Linux, taking up trolling I guess.
So did you register here just to troll, or were you too ashamed to post under your real account? |

I'm in my fifties, I do have one or two rap mp3's on my server, I try to help anybody with a problem that is willing to do a little work themselves to solve it.
