    upgrade dvd firmware

I recently had to upgrade my dvd burners' firmware because it failed to burn some new dvds..

I tried running the installer that i found for windows xp with virtual box but run into some problem. (It actually turned out that vb wasn't the problem, so it might have worked afterall) but for those not willing to spend an hour or so installing an OS only to do a 5min job, i found a great tool that flashes the firmware and it works for linux (the gui doesn't, but the commands are pretty straightforward so even newbies shouldn't have a problem). It supports .bin and most of .exe (!!!) fimrware, and a variety of manufacturers and models (mostly nec though)

hopefully this will save some of you guys some time and frustration..

    Re: upgrading dvd drive firmware

For those with Samsung drives and others that require Windows XP (and not wine, or DOS) to install the firmware from the rpc1 firmware database... I tried for a long time various different options to get this to work.

What worked was Hiran's Boot CD, with "Mini XP". Google that and you should find it.
