Customizing the Root Window

I'm running Xubuntu 8.04. I have an SDL app that I want to render in place of my wallpaper on the root window. How is this done? I can recompile the program if necessary.

Search for xwinwrap
You'll find a bunch of info about using it to have a movie or a screensaver as your background. Use it to run your app instead.

I installed shantz-winwrap from here:

I can get glmatrix to run in a window but can't make anything render to the desktop. Also all the SDL apps I try with it crash immediately.

Edit: I'm not using Compiz, Aiglx, Beryl or any of that jazz.
