Hey, I found the answer to my mute button problem and thought I would pass it on to you.
There were two steps.
First I had to make sure my mute button was mapped correctly. I did this in System / Preferences / Keyboard Shortcuts. Clicked on Volume Mute row and then hit the Mute button.
Then I had to change what sounds the button controlled. I went to System / Preferences / Sound. Under Default Mixer Tracks on the Devices tab, I had to play around to figure out what Device from the pulldown, and then what choice in the window below. For my particular setup, I have Realtek ALC850 rev 0 (OSS Mixer) and the Digital-1 choice in the window below, because I use a digital input to my receiver.
Now my mute button successfully turns the sound off and on.
Hope this helps! -=Drew
