    Question End of Life question

Hardy Desktop's end-of-life is 2011, but the server is 2013.

I assume this means that the desktop-related apps are only supported to 2011, so installing the server edition and then installing a desktop is not going to get me update support beyond 2011 for the desktop elements?

Nope, 8.04.1 LTS (Long term support) basically means that security patches, and bug fixes will be officially released by Canonical, up until 2011. The server version, which is different to the desktop version is supported until 2013. You either have one or the other, and depending on which you use, support will end on the respective date.
A computer is only as powerful as the user who uses it.

    Sounds good.

I intend on replacing Gutsy on my folk's PC (my old Dell) with Hardy this Xmas, hopefully seeing the machine into its dotage without having to think about whether they should be jumping up a step every six months.
