    Im Finally Done.. General Inquiry

Ok, Im finally fed up.. Bill is going the way of the dinosaur.

Ive dabbled with Ubuntuon and off for a long time and finally did a complete transition on my laptop. Taking a poll of what I do and dont in Windblows Ive determined it can all be done in Linux so Im going over for good.

Here is my question.. (yes, I have no doubt it will sound noobish).

Can I install x32 and then install a x64 kernel for my system. If so can somebody detail process. Only reason I ask is the 4G barrier with memory on x32 and I notice the application issues with x64 installations.. so I figure if all the apps are x32 I shouldnt have an issue. Of course feel free to tell me my thinking is completely wrong...

Anyway, soon as I get an answer I plan on shifting later tonight.. forever.

What "application issues"? I've been running Ubuntu x86_64 for quite awhile now, and haven't noticed any issues to speak of. You might want to ask this question in the 64-bit forum as I can't say if what you're asking for is feasible or not.

If the only reason you want the 64bit kernel is the 4GB memory limit, have a look at this thread which explains your options in more detail: Ubuntu with 4GB+ of memory
Don't try to make something "fast" until you are able to quantify "slow".

Why don't you explain the "application issues" you're anticipating? There may be simple workarounds for those.

you could use 32 bit ubuntu with PAE? support and itll work with 4GB+ if im not mistaken.

PAE will only work if your board supports it.

I went ahead with the 64bit. Previously there were some applications that just wouldnt function in the 64bit (I wont drag this on be details). Since there have cleary been a few improvements

Running like a champ at 29C woohoo!
