I'm trying to install Ubuntu on my laptop, but it freezes at the loading screen, and I've been told this command helps it not to freeze, and it really does, but I'd like to know what it does.

it disables dynamic ticks in the kernel.
Thanks, but ummm.... I'm not much of a Linux expert, could you tell me what that means?

It's basically a way to keep your system a little cooler and use a little bit less energy while running. For desktop users, it currently looks like there will be little need to have it on, but for servers, it might be worth it in the long run.
