[SOLVED] Desperately Need Lesson on ALSA and Pulseaudio

I desperately need a knowledgeable person (or two) to give me a lesson on ALSA, Pulseaudio, what they do and why we need both.

Whenever something gets hacked with my sound, I don't know where to look to fix it, because I just don't understand the sound system.

Well actually, you are correct. My guide does not really provide a decent explanation of how these things work. That is party due to the fact that I barely understood them myself when the guide was started as just a pulseaduio setup guide.

Now that is has expanded enormously over the past few months and become a more general guide to sound I really should make an introductory chapter or two explaining how the sound system works in Ubuntu/linux.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I will start right in on it. It may take a while to condense it into a simple and coherent couple of chapters without leaving anything important out.

In the meantime, v.cecchetto has provided a good outline of the basic functions the various parts perform.
