Well, I went ahead and changed my desktop computer from Fedora 8 to Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex. Everything installed correctly and it started up without a hitch.
Once I made the mandatory updates and rebooted I went to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers. In there it told me that the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 177) was recommended so I went ahead and activated it. After it was done installing it told me to reboot. After reboot everything started up without a problem. I opened a terminal and ran the glxinfo command to see if I had direct rendering and I did.
I am not sure why you are experiencing so many difficulties getting it to work correctly, but maybe you just need to do another clean install.
