It's an Acer Aspire One, a netbook. It might just not have the horsepower, although I've ran this stuff on an eee pc 701 without seeing this kind of spike. Might be something with the hardware and bios.

wow,it has a apple keyboard and mackintosh mouse, according to the xorg log.

hey i just noticed your top read out:

    9211 root 20 0 353m 88m 8944 S 7 5.9 562:56.97 Xorg

looks pretty normal to me, mine is about the same, see pic, so i don't think it's high at all.
the higher one with conky, try adjusting your conky timing for a longer interval.

Well, I did have an apple keyboard plugged into it, but it was a Logitech MX mouse.. Who knows. I'm gonna use it for awhile and see what happens. I don't mind not using conky, but it was spiking rather high and causing lag when I had 3 terminals open. Maybe all these changes helped out with that. I guess I'll find out.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

Re: Xorg uses too much CPU

    Hello,

I am experiencing similar issues to the OP when running conky. When not running conky, cpu usage for Xorg hovers between 1% and 3%. After starting conky, Xorg cpu usage hovers around 14%. I'm running an Asus Eee PC with Xubuntu Intrepid Beta and a custom kernel developed by an eeeuser forum member.
