a similar problem was solved by re-enabling APIC in the BIOS and starting the kernel with the option "noapic"

I followed the steps described in that thread. I was able to make a backup copy of menu.lst, but when I added "noapic" I could not save the change.

How do I save the change?

I have added "noapic" as suggested, but it has made no difference. Hibernate does not work at all and Suspend works only if I stay away from Xsane and Gimp.

Unfortunately, that did not work on my system. Suspend still works provided I stay clear of Xsane and Gimp. Hibernate and Restart do not work at all.
