    PS3 1080i/p panels off screen

I have a Vizio 42" plasma with a Sony Playstation 3 running Ubuntu 7.10. If I set the video mode to 720 or 1080 the gnome panels are completely off screen. My current kludge is to simply drag the top panel down and stack it on the bottom panel, this way I can just see the tops of the menu items to get at the gui.

The question is, how to get this screen res situation solved?

Okay problem "worked around", I reinstalled ubuntu making sure to set my fb modes up correctly at the kboot prompt. I also read too late that it is possible to solve it by putting the ps3fb mode lines in the grub file /sigh. Anyway, there are the 2 possible ways to get the resolution going, the first way is what I used, and indeed it does work (there are black bars framing the entire desktop, but I can adjust that later with some fb wizardry, I just want functional for now, will tune to perfection after).
