[SOLVED] Graphics look funny on partition on laptop

I partitioned my laptop this afternoon, got it working. The specs are:-

The specs are Winsows XP SP3, with a Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network adapter, connecting to the internet via a netgear router, with an Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo CPU, T2350 @ 1.86 GHz, 1.18GBRAM.

I was shown website that said my graphics card was ok, to use with Ubuntu.

I have been trying to change the way things look as it looks like it used to in Windows 98, all chunky and a bit frayed. The graphics card seems to work ok in windows.

When I open the Appearance preferences, and go to visual effects and try to change it from None to either Normal or Extra, it says on both 'Desktop Effects could not be enabled'. Could that be the Graphics card,or something in my Permissions.

    Thank you for your help.

    John.

I am not sure if this means anything, but I installed Ubuntu Tweak on my laptop and have managed to get Compiz Config and Cairo Dock installed, it works. Somehow. Managed to change the way things look.
