85 degrees at idle is frickin' hot. My 8600 idles at 49 degrees AND it's passively cooled too.

Hmm... lots of people with 8600s here; the benchmark makes me want to buy a GTX260 or an HD4870
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.

8600GT with 256mb of memory onboard. CPU is an E6450, I think - it's the 65nm Core 2 Duo at 3 GHz. I've got it overclocked to 3.34 GHz.

    Code:
    ####################################
    Unigine Tropics:
    1280 x 1024

    10.6648 Frames Per Second

    Average: 10.66 Frames Per Second
    ####################################
The test appears to not take advantage of multiple CPU cores, unfortunately, but I'm quite impressed with my test results for such a shabby card.

    C2D E8400, 4GB memory, 8800GT:

    Unigine Tropics:
    1440 x 900

    35.2093 Frames Per Second

    Average: 35.20 Frames Per Second
I must say the engine performs rather bad for the quality of the graphics, I was quite disappointed to be honest. Most modern games look a lot better AND peform 75-100% better.

I think the sunset in this demo is 100% better than the sun in Crysis. I would go so far as to say that this demo is very close to or even better in places than Crysis Loved it.

If you want to see how hot your graphics card gets, run:

    MONITOR=all phoronix-test-suite benchmark unigine-tropics
And at the end it will plot on a line graph how hot your system components got during testing
