Thread: HP Linux Coming?

    HP Linux Coming?

This article about HP going around Microsoft. I got the link from Groklaw.

    First Paragraph:

The ecosystem that Microsoft (MSFT) has built up around its Windows operating system is showing signs of strain. In one of several recent moves by partners that sell or support the company's software, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), the world's No. 1 PC maker, has quietly assembled a group of engineers to develop software that will let customers bypass certain features of Vista, the latest version of Windows. Employees on a separate skunk works team are even angling to replace Windows with an HP-assembled operating system, say three sources close to the company.

Doesn't HP already has an OS? (HP-UX)?

That is Unix, and it is proprietary.

Yeah you're right. I'd like to see what HP comes up with if this is true (Though I don't know why they would bother).

Could HP open source it just like Sun did to Solaris?

Depends on how much of the source code they own.

    This is such a rumor.
Of course, they might have to cancel it now because MSFT will want to know what's up.

HPUX is the most annoying thing ever. Thankfully in the newer versions of their products I am working with, they are replacing it for Red Hat.

I think HP-UX is a dead end, as HP has not done anything with it in a while.
Truth be told they might work on their own Linux distribution next due to their histroy of indirectly supporting linux.
On paper HP doesnt support linux, but with a lot of hardware they produce they still support it in secret.
I think HP having a desktop linux deal is very close at hand
