How can i keep current drivers with update?

I have an ATI x1650 graphics card. I know there are problem with 8.04 but the first time i tried 8.04 was with an upgrade from 7.10 and it worked with the old drivers and i never needed to update the restricted drivers. Anyway i am about to perform the same update again (from 7.10) is there a way to ensure i keep the current restricted drivers?
