    Need a new laptop now!!

I just got notice that I am moving onto a new job and need a laptop very quickly.

I've never owned one before, but I've had dell's that were great. I'm looking at either a Inspiron 1420 that I will dual boot, or a Thinkpad. I've heard thinkpads are great with linux and work "out of the box" but I don't know anything about the brand really. Please give me any input or suggestions you might have!

ThinkPad's are decent with Linux, you may also want to try the System76 laptops, those work good too.

Thanks. Do you know anything about the Inspiron's? I have a dell account so that is a big plus with them.

My laptop is pretty good, but I don't know if they sell it anymore.

Well the Inspiron Mini 9 is extremely portable. And I'm sure it would work very well with any Linux distro. But I think my choice would be the Dell XPS M1530. Very nice piece of machinery, and for the fully upgraded version, it has 4 GB' of RAM. Personally I never use enough to use up 2, but you never know. Here is the link.

IBM/Lenovo's ThinkPads should be great. Just got a Lenovo 3000 N200 yesterday and I'm very happy for it! A quick sound fix and everything ran greater than it did on Vista.

Dell did sell Inspirons pre-installed with Ubuntu so I guess they're pretty good, but I haven't had any experience myself. Check out the Desktop Hardware Compatibility List.

I've had good experiences with Acer Aspire laptops.

Seriously? I've only read bad things about them. My friend's Acer Aspire Ferrari something, which cost him 2000$ two years ago, overheats and shutdown when he tries to format lol.

I recently set my mom up with an Aspire 5520 ($600 on newegg) with an XP/Hardy dual boot. Hardy actually had fewer hardware compatibility issues with the laptop than windows.

I've always thought of Acer as crap, but it seems they've moved in the right direction^
