Question Can I check and retrieve gmail from script?

Is is possible to query and retrieve gmail through a script? I want to periodically check my gmail account, and if there is a new email with a particular sender and subject, download its attachment.

I have looked into using the fetchmail to create an offline backup of gmail. I'm sure this would work as I could then interrogate the local copy, but it seems a bit overkill to download all my email when it's only the one or two mails a week I need to action with this script.

    Thanks

And here's another old thread w/c deals with the same topic.
Steady movement is more important than speed, much of the time. So long as there is a regular progression of Stimuli to get your mental hooks into, there is room for lateral movement. Once this begins, its rate is a matter of discretion.

They both seem to deal with checking if new mail is present; I need to do a bit more than that, i.e. downloading the attachment. There may be something in that longer thread with the perl script, but as I am unfamiliar with perl it will take me a while to pick through it.
