    Untrust worthy friend

    Hey there Ubuntu Forum members,

I have a bit of a dilemma here, I have a friend thats living with me and my parents but the problem is, I don't exactly trust him. I have a feeling he may be doing illegal things on our internet connection and I would like to monitor what he is doing.

If you guys can give me ways to monitor his internet activity I will be very appreciative. (Of course I would warn him I was going to do this, I wouldn't like to find out I was being spied on without warning.)

The only reason I even think about doing this is to protect me and my parents from anything bad that can come from him doing anything illegal.

You have tons of different ways to monitor. Like, check the browser history, bash history, set up a keylogger that activates when he starts his session etc..

you know that too much monitoring, especially when you don't inform the other one, you might get yourself into legal problems.

I don't see how you could, when it's your house.

How about not letting him have access to the PC.

Surveillance might be a violation of the other's privacy rights. It's one thing to forbid not using a computer but another one to monitor what a person does on it - especially if that person's not notified of the monitoring.
