Hi favilac,
thank you very much for the correct link to the script (and for writing it
One question: can I install IRAF without creating a new 'IRAF' user? I'd like to install it in my current account, and not have to switch back and forth whenever I need to use it.
My idea is to be able run the 'mkiraf' command inside my Dropbox folder (under my current user session), so as to keep everything (login.cl, loginuser.cl files, 'uparm' dir and the images I'll be working on) synced with my laptop.
Cheers!
Gabriel
The iraf user is needed in the 2.14 series for administration purposes only. You don't have to be the user "iraf" to run the software.
You need to run the mkiraf comand in the $HOME directory of the users to initialize some parameters with login.cl file and the uparm/ directory.
In the new 2.15 version, the iraf user is not used anymore.
Great tutorial.
@favilac
What is the default password to Iraf administrator?
Like @Gaba_p says Is there any method to install IRAF without creating a new 'IRAF' user?
Thank you
The IRAF user doesn't have a password. It's created at install time with the flag --disabled-password.
The new version of IRAF 2.15 doesn't need this account, but 2.14 still requires it.
Just wanted to say thanks! I have forwarded this guide to my fellow astronomers. For the ones searching a short version of this post:
This works on a fresh install of 10.10 ubuntu on VMplayer.sudo apt-get install libc6-dev
wget http://www.astro.uson.mx/~favilac/do...RAF_Ubuntu.iso
mount -o loop -t iso9660 'Where is your iso?' 'Where to mount'
sh install.sh
cd ~
mkiraf
type: xgterm
Trying to follow the code here to install iraf using this iso but i keep running into problems...
mount -o loop -t iso9660 ~/Downloads/IRAF_Ubuntu.iso ~/IRAF
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(could this be the IDE device where you in fact use
ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
I should also add that im currently using 12.04 LTS
