I've an analogue problem: I can't hear any sound after my laptop starts but I can control the sound volume inside totem when playing video. And until now I haven't fixed my problem.
I suggest you to follow the sound guide problem thread in multimedia and video forum. Maybe you'll be more lucky than me. And for further sound problem, I think, it's better to ask for help there
