no sound when playing games

hi,

i am not getting any sound when playing linux games that i downloaded via synaptic.

i know its not my sound card problem as the sound performs normally with my dvds and on youtube.

I have that problem when i leave open a audio or video player and play games. I would like to be able to run more than one sound app and all the sound to work.

yeah i kinda did that, had to leave totem up with a movie paused so that my laptop doesn't go into sleep when i was downloading sauerbraten last night. now the sounds in games dont work.
