    misbehaving video driver

I have the JetWay M2A692-GHG-PB AM2 AMD 690G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard. Whenever I install the proprietary driver for the onboard video (fglrx) the computer will freeze after 20-40 minutes. It has nothing to do with what the computer is doing whether I'm playing a game or just browsing the internet. I was wondering if anyone knew of a fix for this. It shouldn't be due to heat, hard drives, or inadequate or misbehaving RAM and my cpu is plenty capable of handling a game (dual core 2.4 GHz AMD 4600+ windsor 65W). If it helps the onboard video is the ATI Radeon X1250

If there isn't a fix for this, what kind of PCI card would be most compatible with the motherboard I have that will play nice with linux? The video card and drivers are by ATI, can I stick a Nividia card in without causing a conflict in drivers on the machine?
