    External LaCie harddisk somewhat broken...

My external LaCie harddisk has errors, most files and folders do open but one folder isn't recognized under Ubuntu (Gutsy) as folder but as 'unknown type'. Changing the 'Open With' setting to 'Open Folder' doesn't work either.

What would be the best way to check the disk for errors/recover bad blocks/... under Ubuntu (or any other GNU/linux distro for that matter)?

try installing and using testdisk as it can recover partitions and repair etc.
