web based proxy tutorial

I want to setup a proxy for a remote secure browsing and as this is linux there are so many options.

I would like to setup a web based proxy using SSL for encryption. Although the web based part is optional, the security is not. I would also like the front page of the web based part to be passworded.

Can somebody point me to a thread or online tutorial on how to set this up?

Also, I know everybody loves squid for this kind of thing, but I heard it's a pain to setup. Is that true and if so, what other ones do you think are good?
