You have a line for Ethernet that says you have a Atheros AR242x. The Atheros site has a Linux page the pretty much points to using madwifi.

If you don't have madwifi already installed, I recommend connecting on your hardwired port, and installing madwifi via synaptic. (do a full update too, if you haven't already)

You have to install the madwifi package. An Update isn't going to fix your issue, he just recommended it because its good practice to update your system.

you can search for the package in synaptic, or you can go to a command line and type
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install madwifi

can you please also post the results of these commands:

    Code:
    iwconfig
    sudo iwlist scan
they will tell us if the wlan drivers are active.

Apparently I have done something wrong. I went to the site mentioned and downloaded the package then i went to the synpatic manager and installled it and still this is what i got

    sudo apt-get install madwifi
    [sudo] password for
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    E: Couldn't find package madwifi
