    way to recover deleted history?

a real good friend of mine since high school has asked me to do her a favor

she suspects that her boyfriend has been cheating on her and she asked me to search their internet history to find who he has been chatting with

(i know this probably is not my place to get involved, but like i said we are very good friends and i would hate to see something like that happen to her)

usually this would be a simple task but he seems to have been manually clearing the private data every time he logs off firefox

normally with windows and internet explorer i could easily find cookies or something that never got deleted, but with ubuntu and firefox having a feature to clear private data it seems to be almost impossible to find anything usefull

is there any way i can recover some of those deleted history files or cookies or anything?

btw the computer stays on all the time and has not been restarted, and the user has not been loged off since he was last online (if it helps)

You could check in /tmp, but if he cleared the cache, then there probably isn't any thing in there either.

hmm... he must have cleared that too

if i were to setup a man in the middle with ettercap would it be possible to log emails and chats?

or could i somehow log the browsing history onto my laptop using the arp poisoning

EDIT: nevermind, i figured it all out, i think

i acessed the router and found that the router acutually keeps its own connection history

in the history i found nothing but a bunch of porn sites (apparently he's not cheating)

    thanks for the help

If you have physical access to the machine... you can place a script that saves all that data in a hidden place, and go get it later. With physical the possibilities are endless...

Note that although I gave you a hint, I think that it's morally wrong to overlook someone else's right to privacy.

i argree, i dont usually like to snoop into other peoples privacy

just taking a peep at the browsing history was enough to convnce me that he is not cheating on her, im not going to persue the issue any further

i told her that she has nothing to worry about
