Help: Sound Problem

hi,
i am new to ubuntu, i installed it few days ago. but then i have problem with my sound. its really low and the sound quality is poor.
i have tried everything, including installing GNOME alsamixer and alsamixergui. i also checked the master volume, PCM and front, as they are the important ones, but nothing seems to work. also whenever i put my head phones in, the sound comes from the speakers instead of the headphones.
if anyone knows how to solve my problem i will be very grateful
