no sound after installing a new ubuntu 8.04

hi. I am a new ubuntu user. Days ago I installed ubuntu 8.04 but till now I can not hear any sound. When I type in "aplay -l" as what the previous thread says, I get messages back like this:

And I think my speaker is not muted at the same time. Can somebody help me diagnose what happened? I can give more info about it if you want.

Hey this might be a trivial solution. Open your sound manager and play with the master volume and other volume controls. Meaning turn all volumes down and then start turning it up. Sometimes the sounds just kick in. It happened to me a couple of days ago. Play an mp3 or somethine while doing it.
