You used a single quote for m='pwd' instead of the back quote "`" so it should have read:

sudo make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd`
If I remember correctly you can also do:

sudo make -C /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/buld M= $(pwd)
and it will do the same thing but not use the quotes.
