I'm trying to get hardy working on my inspiron 5150. 7.04 worked perfectly but the upgrade to 7.10 caused my screen to
freeze at login. Eventually I gave up on the problem, but I'd like to get it working again. However, the same problem persists in 8.04.
My video card is a ATI mobility 9000, lspci gives this...

I installed 8.04 from a live-cd by loading it in "Safe Graphics Mode." Now when I boot the system, it defaults back to the vesa driver which works just fine but with no 3D desktop abilities.
Here is the xorg.conf that actually allows me to boot without freezing...

Now here is the tricky thing...
While troubleshooting the problem I booted in troubleshoot mode (or whatever it's called), so I was logged in as root. When I ran the command "startx" the GUI booted perfectly using the "ati" driver and all desktop effects worked perfectly. I copied the xorg.conf from this session and it looked like this.

I tried to copy this xorg.conf file and use it as my default xorg for normal sessions, but it once again froze right at the log-in screen. I also tried copying the xorg.conf file from a 7.04 live-cd session but that froze too.
Now I'm stuck. I know my hardware is capable of running with full 3D support (since I was able to do it while running as root), but I just don't know what is causing the failure of the "ati" driver under normal boot.
FYI, I probably know just enough about linux to cause problems (but not enough to know how to fix them). This post is kind of a last hope as I have read almost all of the existing relevant posts on the subject. Thanks in advance for the help.
