Hi there! Could my laptop support ubuntu?

I have a windows 98, it has 5gb on it. ALthough, it doesn't have a CD drive!!! My other laptop does, but it has 1.39gb on it. We found an external CD drive that works, it works fine on the other laptop, but..... this one plugs into the PMCIA slot. I don't know if thats what you call it but i think i was close. Would this one do the trick in the bios? Or would it be needed to have a built in one!? I really want ubuntu bad on my other computer. I checked, it does have the right requirements to run ubuntu. If there is anybody that could help me, please do!

How much RAM does the laptop have? I know Ubuntu needs at least 256MB to install from the alt CD, and 384MB from a live CD. Xubuntu might work on the laptop better.

    Like xubuntu, kubuntu, edubuntu, ect.
Another one you might think of (I've tried alot of small lightweight distros in search of the perfect one) is LXDE. It's actually in the top 5 least popular desktops but its new, quick and almost offers the functuality of gnome or kde. Distros that currently use it are:
    Distros currently using LXDE

    * PUD GNU/Linux: Ubuntu-based installable live cd with LXDE
    * TinyMe: PCLinuxOS-based tiny distro using some components of LXDE
    * Slitaz: Extremely small live cd using most of the components of LXDE
    * Greenie: Ubuntu-based OS with LXDE and GNOME desktop enviroments
    * Ubuntulite: Member of Ubuntu Derivatives featuring LXDE
    * Vectorlinux LITE: VectorLinux LITE edition
    * Myah OS 3.0 Box edition: LXDE flavor of Myah OS
