Cannot install ubuntu desktop edition over ubuntu server edition

I have a desktop on which I am trying to make a server. I installed the latest ubuntu server edition but I also wanted to have gui so I want to install ubuntu desktop edition. But now that I installed ubuntu server edition I have not been able to install any other OS so far.

    I have:ubuntu server edition
I tried installing : ubuntu desktop edition
error I am getting: out of range change the signal time
In my opinion when I installed ubuntu server edition the os changed the monitor settings somewhere which I do not know hot go back to where it was.

I also tried installing opensolaris which also gives me the same error
I cannot even install any OS ubuntu server edition screwed me up real bad. I think ubuntu changed something in the monitor and I could not detect any OS now. It says time signal . Can anyone help me I am never going to install ubuntu again. Please help!
