Question Windows XP in qemu activation problem

I deleted the Windows partition on my desktop so that I could (legally) reinstall XP in qemu--which worked fine. I even have Internet support by doing "qemu xp.img -net nic -net user" and can browse the web, download updates, etc. But the Windows activation keeps complaining about not being able to connect. Is it because of how I have the network set up?

Hmm, unfortunately it is much easier to use a pirate copy of XP on a virtual system...

Hah, well I went ahead and called Microsoft to do activation by phone, so my problem is solved, but I am still wondering why it couldn't connect to the activation server.
