Question does anyone have recommendations for filters for kids?

i would like to find software that will weed out accidental inappropriate search results for very young kids. of course, i know that i should watch them. there is only so much the hit-search-scan-quick-pick-something-decent routine can cover up. (ever search for images of pink my little ponies with a kindergartner ?)

the range of ages is 5 to 13. all their computers are in one room and they only im with people we know irl.

thanks in advance for your recommendations.

OpenDNS provides that functionality for at least porn content, maybe other stuff too. Also, check to see if your ISP provides the service. When I was with Verizon they provided a Yahoo filtering service free of charge. They didn't advertise it well at all though.

Update: I just remembered that the Yahoo filtering service was Windows only. The kids have XP computers so I had it installed on their computers.

I second the OpenDNS option, it does a pretty good job, and allows the user (administrator) a whole lot of options.

Observation is your best tool. Sure it takes time, but that's what having kids is about. Should inappropriate stuff come up, it'd turn into a good time to talk to your kids about it. It's likely that your kid would be more embarrassed about stumbling upon something inappropriate than you would. Teach your kids your values, don't filter them.

    Hmm, that's kinda profound.

If searching for images is what concerns you, use w3m.

There is a free firefox add-on for that.

Take a look at it here:

    http://www.glubble.com/

    It's aimed at young children.

That being said, I won't do that to my kids (not that I have any yet, only 21).

So what if they come across some porn? If they come across it, they will most likely tell you. And then it's time for a talk.

You could look into switching your router to OpenDNS You won't notice much difference in browsing, and it supports filtering adult content etc.

On the other hand, your router may support content filtering also

I do have kids, and I use glubble, Its bloody annoying but it means I can leave them at the pc while I do other stuff.
