List of New Features in Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex"

I'm sorry I didn't update this for three days, I was very busy. But err, I knew it. I don't have enough time to update this and the blog.

From now on, I declare this topic DEAD. Head over to my blog:
http://ubuntunext.blogspot.com/

Because all the posts about new features in 8.10 are scattered here and there, I thought I would compile it all into one convenient place.

For a more detailed, throughout explanation of each bullet, please see my new blog:

http://ubuntunext.blogspot.com/

I recommend you go there and not here, but otherwise, this topic is not dead, it is still being updated.

Want to start anticipating for 9.04? I've started too! Check here: http://ubuntunext904.blogspot.com/

Major Features
  • [LINK] GNOME 2.24.x. (GNOME 2.23.91 development version at the moment.)
    • [LINK] Nautilus finally has tab support and can now restore from Trash.
    • [LINK] File Roller ("Archive Manager") now uses p7zip to extract archives, so it supports ALZ, RZIP, CAB, TAR.7Z now also.
    • [LINK] Empathy IM client and Hamster time tracker are two new applications that have been accepted into GNOME 2.24 "module suite."
    • [TOBE] When you try to log out, shutdown, etc. with (a) program(s) open, a warning pops up stating you must close all applications first.
    • [LINK] [LINK] Redesigned "Quit..." menu very similar to Mac OS X's (unlike before which was similar to XP.)
  • [LINK] [LINK] [LINK] Complete theme overhaul. (With alpha 4, the default theme was switched back to Human(-Murrine.))
  • [LINK] [LINK] OpenOffice.org 3.0.x with MS Office 2007 new file support.
  • [LINK] [LINK] [LINK] Linux kernel 2.6.27 images have been prepared and will be uploaded soon to Intrepid.
  • [LINK] Compiz 0.7.7 development release from Git with tons of new effects.
  • [LINK] [LINK] [LINK] Network Manager 0.7.x with better network configuring and 3G support.
  • [LINK] Ability to sign in as Guest via (Fast) User Switcher panel applet.
  • [LINK] [LINK] Default Adobe Flash 10.x.x.x (RC now) in repos to enhance Flash experience.
  • [LINK] Improved Jockey ("Hardware Manager") to additionally download printer drivers when needed.
  • [LINK] [LINK] Official USB installation support for converting ISO CD image files into USB-live compatible files. EDIT: Work has started! Package usb-creator just got in!
  • [LINK] Ubiquity (Ubuntu installer) layout redesign.
    • [LINK] An "Automatically sign in" option added at the fifth step of Ubiquity (Ubuntu installer) "Who are you?."
  • [LINK] Secret ~/Private folder to encrypt anything you place into it.
  • [LINK] X.Org 7.4, still in development, with X Server 1.5 and Mesa 7.1, is included in Intrepid.

Uncertain Features
  • [LINK] I thought it'd never start; and by the time they did, I thought they would ship and outdated version. But they have been working on it! PackageKit! Help test it in 8.04 and 8.10 by seeing here!
  • [LINK] [LINK] [LINK] "Login experience" GDM redesign. (I've learned from here that it is called "login experience," not "face browser.")
  • [LINK] Empathy to replace Pidgin if stable enough.
  • [LINK] Built-in font-selector for better system-wide font configuration.
  • [LINK] System Cleaner, a new way to clean up cruft from your system (usually) after updating.
  • [LINK] GIMP 2.6.x (if the Ubuntu developers are willing, seeing as how the feature freeze already came.)

Minor Features
  • [LINK] OpenJDK pre-installed as default Java runtime.
  • [LINK] [LINK] Failsafe BulletProofX login mode to be removed.
  • [LINK] Transmission 1.33 is in! The Ubuntu devs pushed it in before Intrepid's feature freeze.
  • [LINK] Synaptic package manager 0.62.x with new "Quick search" feature in place of "Search."
  • [LINK] [LINK] Pidgin 2.5 has been uploaded into Intrepid. If Empathy doesn't replace it, it'll stay as v2.5.
  • [LINK] Brasero 0.8.x with new features and bug-fixes.
  • [LINK] GIMP 2.4.7 is in the repos. GIMP 2.5.3, however, is not.

Tut tut, forgot the single biggest change in the repos:

KDE 4.1 by default in Kubuntu! Tis a beautiful thing, for those who have not yet tried it. This brings a host of improvements to the Kubuntu desktop:

- QT4 based
- New Kickoff menu
- Solid device manager
- Phonon audio backend
- Plasma desktop
- Compositing support in Kwin
- And many more! Buy now and get a free set of steak knives.

I hope Pidgin doesn't get replaced, I love Pidgin, it's simple, just how I like it. Can't see my self switching to something else, but I guess I can just download and install Pidgin after my 8.10 installation (just a little bit of extra effort )

I don't see the logic in replacing a perfectly good IM client with a lesser one just because its the default upstream. Ubuntu Dev breaks with upstream on other aspects, so why would this be different?

I agree with denzilla. Why would they replace Pidgin? I mean come on! Most people use it a lot! All of my friends with Ubuntu use it.

Empathy is, in my opinion, a superior IM client. It supports all the protocols that libpurple supports, and also a bunch of others, and also has audio and video support, something that Pidgin users (including myself) have been requesting for years. I don't think anyone has to worry about loosing functionality with this switch.

I won't be giving up Pidgin anytime soon. Sorry, used GAIM since the beginning, and have no desire to change that now.

Empathy offers a bright future while Pidgin has been stuck for ages. Do you ever want voice/video?

Because of telepathy, it may take a few releases before the full benefits are seen but it will be a major milestone for gnome. There's a bit of info here.
