usb flash drives and printers not being detected

    Hi

I have been using ubuntu for about 6 months now and have been fairly happy. every now and then something goes wrong though.

When I initially installed ubuntu my usb ports were all working properly but now seem to have stopped. When i connect a flash drive or usb printer to my computer once I have booted up it does not get detected but if I restart with either plugged in I can use them untill I unplug them. Then if I plug them in again nothing happens. A usb mouse still does work though.

Does anyone have any Idea what is wrong.

try booting up with the livecd. if it sees the usb devices, then there's a problem with your installed system. if it doesn't see the usb devices, then there's a problem with the pc hardware
