Transfer data from 5.04 partition to 8.04 partition

I set up a samba server for home network about 4 years ago running ubuntu 5.04. Old 486, 250G HD, knew nothing about linux, just relied on the gui & swat. It worked. Now its 2008. Need to upgrade HD. Got a 500G drive and 8.04 server edition. Discovered no upgrade path so installed 8.04 server clean on 500G HD. Now wish to move data from old drive. Got it physically installed. Sudo fdisk -l shows /dev/sda: 500GB and /dev/sdb: 250GB. Need advice on CLI commands to move data. Determined to run server headless without gui this time round although bloody steep learning curve. Specific questions. How to mount old drive. Can it be to any folder on sdb? Do I need to recreate exact environment (users, permissions) on server first. Can all this be done remotely?

    Moved to server platforms.
