Unable to select a custom desktop background

    Hi,

I've been trying to change my desktop background image to something different than the standard ones that comes with Ubuntu, but as soon as I choose to open them and apply it to the desktop, nothing happens,

    I am using Ubuntu 8.04.

    Hi thanks for the reply.

The file format I am trying to apply is .jpg

I have not yet tried .png or anything else.

Don't know if maybe something is corrupted on my system.

I have not yet tried to save an image in firefox to save it.

I've tried to load images from my portable hard drive that I've saved before, but Ubuntu doesn't recognize them or something.
