I was intrigued by the movie Big Buck Bunny and the fact that it was made with all open source software. Mainly Blender, I think.

I was wondering if many people use Blender, and if so, what do you use it for?

I like 3D graphics, but I'm no artist. It's one of those intermittent hobbies that I pick up every 6 months or so, stick with for 2 weeks, then leave again.

If you want to see what else Blender can do, check out the Gallery forum here:

I installed it yesterday. Does it take long to learn the basics?
I'd like to create some fantasy art.

It's a bit non-intuitive to begin with, but it's pretty easy to get the hang of the basics once you've got over the shock of the interface filled with buttons. The interface is designed so you work with one hand on the keyboard and one on the mouse, which is very efficient once you've got used to it.

There's plenty of tutorials around, but I'd definitely recommend getting the official Blender Guide, as it takes you from first principals right through to the advanced features such as character rigging. Although it's a few versions behind, and doesn't contain stuff about new features like liquid simulation, it's still very good.

    Hope this helps,
