Angry Problem: Desktop blanks out after enabling ATI graphics card

I just installed ubuntu on my computer. It was originally running windows XP but I completely switched to ubuntu. However now, after successfully installing the new OS on my computer, when I enable my graphics card, which is an ATI Radeon X1600, The desktop turns black after the login screen. Can anyone help with this problem? :S I've tried changing the resolution but It still doesn't work.

err...I'm not for sure on it...but i do believe that Linux doesn't fully support ATI...I'm running on one at the moment, but i'm pretty positive it doesn't because when playing games with high graphics, i experience Constant Black flashes while playing, which get UBER Frustrating!!! my advice to you is to uninstall the driver you just installed (assuming that's what you did...) and run like that until you can get another card, which is the same thing I'm doing...but if what i said is no help to you...then i just wish you luck, cause i'm not that smart with Linux as these others are...
