Exclamation Installing for the first time

I just installed Ubuntu 8.04 and when it asks me for my username and password, I type it in and then I get a black screen and it kicks me back to the login page asking me for username and password. I was able to login with the previous version but the version will not let me login. Any suggestions would be appreciate it. Thanks.

You can go to Recovery mode and try 'xfix'

    Did you try Recovery Mode?
